Heavenly Bamboo

Also known as Sacred Bamboo, also known as Nandina Domestica is another one of our favorites, ok we’re going to stop saying that, in reality we haven’t met a plant we didn’t like. That’s not true as well, we used to not like Kalanchoe, now we love Kalanchoe! Please see our earlier post Kalanchoe Bonsai Display Only at Black Ring Coffee in Long Beach by TajAthO’s Garden. One of the things we like to do is buy plants that look as if they may not make it on the store or nursery shelf and turn them into plant compositions. Yes we do lean toward a more Asian aesthetic, in our plant compositions we try to do so with a little Bohemian flair.

Now back to so called Heavenly Bamboo, normally grown as a shrub and an excellent addition to any garden it is also a wonderful plant to work with as a “Bonsai,” again we are Bonsai Practitioners not artists. Due to the fact that it is a slow to moderate grower it can work well in pots, however one would have to be cognizant of it’s growth. Water can be tricky the plant doesn’t like soggy roots aka wet feet, so moderate watering is recommended for our compositions. We use moss not only for aesthetic purposes but also for watering purposes. Misting the moss and rocks will yes benefit the moss however the heavenly bamboo will love the humidity that this process produces.

For our Heavenly Bamboo creations we suggest that you bottom water them every two weeks in the summer once in the winter, and then mist the moss daily. Set the containers in one inch of water and allow the water to be consumed for about fifteen minuets. In the morning you can set them outside but make sure the moss doesn’t get too much heat, and then bring them inside during the evening where you can mist the moss again.

Heavenly Bamboo is thought to bring good fortune especially in places where it is indigenous from the Himalayas to East Asia. We recommend using Heavenly Bamboo as we do with Jade in your Zoom meetings or as a center piece when you are entertaining, family and friends. To the Japanese Nandina is thought to be a gift of purification and plat to clear the air. To watch the color of the foliage change will be enjoyable and inspiring.
