Our Christmas Cacti are here just in time for the Holidays.

Thank You, for joining us here at TajAthO’s Garden, and thank you for visiting Black Ring Coffee, which may be the reason you are visiting our website. Black Ring Coffee is a supporter of artists and purveyors like myself and we owe them nothing but gratitude.

Now let’s talk about the so called Christmas Cactus, (you’ll find we use the phrase ‘so called’ often, the only reason is due to the fact that many of the names these plants were native to, got lost by the cultures that named them.) The Christmas Cactus is indigenous to Brazil and the aboriginal of Brazil did not know about Christmas until the Christians showed up, I’m just saying. The Christmas Cactus is a rainforest plant and can be grown indoors during the winter when most people in North America attain or see one, once summer comes around you can set them outdoors. However if you live in Southern California like we do you’ll want to water the Christmas Cactus regularly during the summer months, just remember that it’s a rainforest cacti not a desert cacti. This species of Cacti can grow in light or shade but try to find a balance, not too much of on or the other. The soil seems to not be too important but we use one of our compost cacti mixes and the seem to thrive in that mixture. Humidity is important so try to mist and humidify as much as possible.

Now the most popular point the blooms on the Christmas Cactus, again if you live in Southern California you’ll want to bring the Cacti in and if you see the buds you’ll want to reduce the light to increase the bloom. This should probably take place sometime after September. Keep away from vents, drafts, and heaters. Try to maintain the temperature environment as much as possible, for the Christmas Cactus. Once the blooms begin to fall you can begin to prune in order to increase growth for the next season. This will encourage the plant to grow out. You can use some of the cuttings to propagate the plant as it’s easy to propagate. You can root the segment in some filtered water.

You won’t have to repot anytime soon as this plant loves to be root-bound so wait at least a year before you repot and if you do repot do so after the plant has bloomed.

The Christmas Cacti have no known symbolic properties, some believe they represent loyalty and resilience due to the way the grow and thrive. Thank you and enjoy if you have any more info or if we missed anything feel free to leave a message in comments an we will update our post accordingly.
