If you have read any of our previous posts you’re probably saying, “We know, we know one of you favorites.” These truly are we appreciate the slow growth of the Ponytail palm and the low maintenance that they require.

The best part of the Ponytail palm is that they almost seem to appreciate indifference, even though we talk to ours all of the time, that will be one of our other posts, talking to plants. The best thing one can do is to try to place the Ponytail Palm in an environment as close to their origin as possible. Originating from Eastern Mexico, some Ponytail palms can grow to be 30 feet in height, in their natural environment. Ok we are getting a little excited. Ponytail palms like full sun or bright indirect light, we tend to try to keep them in the same place. We suggest that you look for a window that get’s bright light as often as possible. The Ponytail Palm actually isn’t a palm tree, Ponytail palms have a closer relationship to the Agave and Yucca family, and if you know anything about Agave and Yucca they don’t need that much water.
So the most common concern that you have will be how much water and when, and we suggest minimal and sparingly but most of all we suggest that you don’t use tap water under any circumstances to water your plants, again that is for another post. Never leave a Ponytail Palm in a plastic pot in our opinion any indoor plant that is left in plastic will never be as happy as it could be and if it is then it really loves you. We love putting all of our plants in ceramic or clay pots, there is something about the absorption of heat and water that they tend to contribute to.
This plant like many, will go into a dormancy experience during the winter like many indoor plants have and will. This is when many people think that their plant is not doing well, so they’ll over water or put it outside to get some sun, in the winter. This is never a good idea, however it is a great time to repot the plant then watch it thrive again in Spring. The great thing about this plant is that it is non toxic to dogs or cats and you won’t have to repot it for years.

Now our favorite part, these plant are thought to represent the free and strong willed probably because you can go away from them and they will be ok when you get back.
Chances are more than not if you’re reading this you bought this plant from Black Ring Coffee and we thank you, if you have any questions, concerns, or hopes please contact us in the comments or follow us here.

This is an UPDATE as of 5/20/2023. Upon further research we have found that the Ponytail Palm has more “mystical” properties than previously mentioned. The essential properties are balance, psychic ability, happiness so this wonder would be an excellent addition to your home. In Feng Shui they represent an inner balance between yin and yang energy and by keeping the balance they tend to appeal to your spirit, where nothing has to be rushed or immediate. Everything will come in due time, this is why the Ponytail Palm would be a great plant for a meditation or yoga area. Again if you have any questions, please leave a comment or contact us here.
